Located within the Cittadella dei Musei atop Cagliari's historic Castello district, the Museo d'Arte Siamese Stefano Cardu holds one of Europe's most distinctive collections of historic Thai art. The museum is named after Stefano Cardu, a Sardinian traveler, engineer, and architect who lived in Bangkok during the late 19th century under the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). In 1914, Cardu donated his extensive private collection of Southeast and East Asian art to his native city of Cagliari.
