<Couture for the Bodhisattvas - An artistic offering of devotion through haute couture> reinterprets traditional Buddhist iconography through the lens of contemporary fashion, adorning the Bodhisattvas with the highest form of beauty. The garments in the painting draw inspiration from Schiaparelli’s 2023 haute couture collection—its sculptural silhouettes and golden embroidery are fused with Buddhist ornamental motifs to become a new form of sacred robe. In this context, couture transcends decoration and functions as a “modern offering,” translating reverence and devotion into a visual language that resonates within today’s art culture.
Although the imagery is modern, the work is executed with the traditional techniques of Goryeo Buddhist painting, including silk support, natural mineral pigments, reverse coloring, and gold detailing. Through this layered contrast, the piece explores how Buddhist iconography can remain alive and relevant in today’s visual culture — not as a distant doctrine, but as something approachable, humorous, and emotionally accessible.
