Description

Artist: LAM VAN TUAN

Lam Van Tuan (a member of Being. Collective) is an art practitioner who currently employs lacquer as his primary medium to interpret the hidden elements within and around him-ranging from psychological vibrations and humans in contemporary society to the intricate relationship between humanity and nature.
To Lam Van Tuan, lacquer is not merely a material but a language that conveys the contradiction between intention and fortuity. The repetitive process of layering and sanding reflects an confrontation with the self, where “deviations” and unexpected textures reveal the beauty and imperfections inherent in every human being. Rather than seeking absolute answers, Tuan aims to create interactive spaces-realms where viewers can perceive themselves through the paintings, the sanded marks, and the intervals between the lacquer layers.

THE CREATIVE TRAJECTORY
For Tuan, painting is a process of seeking and maintaining the state of "Flow." It is a moment of pure, absolute concentration, where surrounding time and space seem to dissolve, leaving only the profound connection between the artist and the artwork. He regards mediums such as watercolor and gouache as vehicles for rapidly capturing emotions, through which he explores flat color fields and simplified geometric forms. Yet, his ultimate destination remains lacquer.

TECHNIQUE AND VISUAL LANGUAGE
Tuan translates the concepts from his quick sketches into lacquer, utilizing the medium's signature sanding techniques and distinctive textures to imbue his paintings with depth. The figures in Tuan's works are often positioned within a serene or subtly abstract space. They mirror Tuan himself during the creative process: entirely detached from the external clamor to immerse themselves in their own interior world. To him, the artwork stands as definitive evidence, documenting the very moment that "Flow" took place.
